Description
This site was the first of four substantial sections cut through the City Walls in 1989-1990 to investigate the reasons for movement and weaknesses that had been observed in recent years. In this case it involved the complete dismantling of the wall structure and sectioning of the underlying Roman rampart to natural deposits. Boreholes drilled from the base of the rampart indicated the presence of 1.4-1.5m of undisturbed silty sand above the bedrock. The earliest man made feature was the rampart which was preserved to a height of 2.72m and a width of 1.63m. The wall itself indicated a higher level of alteration with only the base course surviving. (1)
