Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Northgate Gardens (formerly the Cestrian Builder’s Yard on Water Tower Street) were carried out in 1984 and in 1989/90 identifying remains of the Roman defences. The work was required to repair the city wall with foundations recorded on the same alignment as the present City Wall.
The lower courses of the Roman foundations were encountered during the excavation of a trench 1.4m deep recording several phases of activity. The earliest evidence comprised two courses of dry built roughly dressed sandstone blocks of a similar construction to that encountered elsewhere on the North Wall (e.g. CHER 8202/4), the lower of which was interpreted as the base course 0.30m high and projecting 0.25m beyond the second course. Above this a further five courses of irregular Roman masonry was encountered. A layer of fallen masonry was also recorded adjacent to the wall, obstructing any possible investigation of the foundations. (1)
Subsequent investigations at the same site in 1989/90 identified further Roman remains in the adjacent section of wall. In this case, the work required the complete dismantlement of the wall followed by investigation into the Roman rampart down to the natural deposits. Evidence of the Roman wall was more limited in this section that in the earlier investigations with only one base course of Roman origin identified. (1)
The date of construction of the stone revetment wall is disputed. It is possible that the southern and eastern sectors were started at the beginning of the second century, along with the towers, but that remaining sectors were not completed until the early third century. Evidence of two phases of reconstruction incorporating re-used stones has been found on all but the south side, accompanied in some cases by rubble in the ditch. It is suggested that reconstruction to the original width is to be dated to the start of the fourth century, but that doubling of the width may belong to the Saxon period.
