Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Northgate Gardens (formerly the Cestrian Builder’s Yard on Water Tower Street) 1989/90 identified evidence of the Roman earth rampart. In this case, the work required the complete dismantlement of the wall followed by investigation into the Roman rampart down to the natural deposits.
The earth rampart survived as a series of layers comprising dense clay and lenses of sandy material believed to be the turves themselves interpreted as part of the outer part of the rampart. A layer of staining at the base of the rampart was also tentatively identified as the timber strapping used to reduce movement of the earth bank. The rampart survived to a height of 2.72m but for a width of only 1.63m of its original 6m possibly as a result of later truncation of the rearward part of the rampart for buildings and oven as recorded elsewhere in the Roman period. Alternatively it has been suggested that this represented much more recent truncation in the 19th century following the collapse of this section of the wall (CHER 8202/5/1).
The defences of the Roman fortress comprised several components: The rampart (artificial bank), built in the late first century, consisted of a core of sand, clay or rubble held in place to the front and rear by revetments of stacked turves. It was set on a base of close-set transverse logs and measured approx 6m wide by perhaps 3m high. The top of the rampart would have been flattened to create a walkway that could be patrolled and would have had been protected by a wooden palisade. In all the defences defined a rectangular space some 592m long and 411m wide.
