Description

Excavation just outside the slype (the covered passage from the cloister between the North Transept and the Chapter House). Roman, Norman and medieval features were recorded (1). The Roman buildings are thought to be part of the timber barrack blocks, Norman foundations for the first dormitory were also recorded along with the latrine, also part of the staircase to the later first floor dormitory. Parts of the basement below the dormitory was recorded which appeared to have been a particularly fine room. A corbel found outside the present dormitory wall indicates the presence of another vaulted chamber here. A number of eighteenth and nineteenth century drains were also recorded (3).
