Description

An archaeological watching brief monitoring groundworks associated with the rebuilding of a section of the south wall at Grosvenor Park, Chester. The ground disturbance consisted of the excavation of a linear trench (c50m by 2m) up against the north side of the unstable wall. Following the identification of a 2m thick soil overburden, three test trenches were quickly excavated along the proposed line of the trench. The test trenches demonstrated the presence of a thick soil accumulation of little archaeological merit on the north side of the wall. Although no features of archaeological interest was observed at this level, there was a very deep overburden of soil and medieval pottery was recovered from a lower soil level.
