Description
Evaluation work in advance of the construction of an extension to the parish church (north of the west end of the north aisle) revealed evidence of articulated burials at a depth of 1m. Trenches adjacent to the aisles revealed foundation underlying the wall of the ailse which appeared to pre-date the present phase of construction. Residual material included Roman, medieval, and post-medieval ceramics and artefacts. The results of the evaluation were used to design a strategy which would allow the preservation in situ of the bulk of the archaeological deposits by means of a thickened raft foundation.
Subsequent specialist finds report for this evaluation produced in 2015 by Leigh Dodd.
