Monument record 2046 - Possible Roman features at St Alban's Church

Please read our .

Summary

In 1982, drainage work around the church entailed the excavation of an area around the church and a trench part way along the line of the churchyard path. The Excavations Section of the Grosvenor Museum recorded the discoveries. Within the foundations were three blocks of sandstone with layers of painted plaster on the outer faces. One block had yellow, grey and red bands on a white background. Another block had been reused and had a coat of white lime wash. Possibly Roman. On the north side of the church, as part of the foundations of the west corner buttress of the north aisle, parts of several large dressed sandstone blocks were uncovered and a block with a gulley carved into it. All sandstone blocks were left in situ. A small group of Roman pottery was found of C2-C4 date, including Severn Valley and Nene Valley ware and a piece of Mancetter-Hartshill mortarium. A further small group of Roman pottery was found during archaeological evaluation trenches in 2009.
