Description

A watching brief revealed an eighteenth or nineteenth century make-up deposit underlying the current garden soil (1). To the east of the garden this could be seen to be deeper than at the western extent. This may relate to the natural slope of the site; however, due to the size of the geotechnical trenches, this cannot be confirmed at present. Due to the nature of the deposits it can be seen that the nineteenth century make-up relates to the levelling of the site and possible backfilling of earlier cellars or pits. The eighteenth century garden soil seen underlying the makeup deposit provides a level for the pre-nineteenth century surface of the site (1).
