Description
Nine test pits, excavated by hand across the study area, a plot of land to the west of Souter's Lane) to pre-determined depths (1). The principal aim of the investigation was to determine the below-ground potential for in-situ archaeological deposits. Of the nine pits, three revealed evidence for in-situ Roman archaeology whereas the other six revealed late post-Medieval archaeology. All finds from the test pits were retained for study. The assemblage, as a whole, has little potential for further analysis, however the clay tobacco pipe assemblage is of particular significance considering the close proximity to a known pipe factory (1).
