Full Description
During an archaeological evaluation of nine test pits in the southern part of the Roman Gardens (or the land to the west of Souter's Ln.) in 1999, post medieval finds including large amounts of clay tobacco pipe fragments were recovered. The land is known to have been open or wooded throughout the medieval and post medieval periods, and these finds may have arrived on site over the course of twentieth century landscaping relating to the construction of the former bowling green and a terrace overlooking it. The clay pipe fragments likely derived from the manufactory's near the New Gate (CHER 10067) (1).
