Description

As a group of heritage sites, the study area has enormous potential and is without parallel in Chester. The group value of monuments from the earliest period of Chester's history up to the mid-twentieth century is without parallel in Chester. It contains the city's largest exposed Roman structure, the only visible Saxon monument, the finest Norman architecture, unusual medieval remains, significant associations with the Civil War and a group of fine eighteenth to twentieth century buildings. Heritage assessment discusses several key features in the area including Dee House, the Roman amphitheatre, St John the Baptist's Church, the Anchorite's Cell, The Bishop's Palace, The Riverside, The Roman Garden area, The City Walls, Barnaby't Tower, The New Gate, The Wolf Gate, The South-east Angle Tower, Thimbleby's Tower, Lumley Place, Chester Visitor Centre and Grosvenor Park.
