Description

Weaver Hall is currently the Headquarters of Cheshire Museums Service but was constructed in 1837 as a workhouse. The structure originally possessed a number of rear wings and courtyards but these were demolished in the 1970s. Proposals are currently being prepared to move the museum to a new site and convert the existing building to residential use, with some new building to the rear. Evaluation trenching was designed to assess the survival of the remains of the demolished wings and demonstrated that this was very poor, with walls demolished down to foundation level and floors removed. The trenching did, however, show that the demolished wings had been constructed on a deep accumulation of dumped material, which had been imported in order to level up the sloping ground to the rear of the building frontage.
