Summary

19th century Grade II listed viaduct built across the valley of the rivers Dane, Weaver and the Weaver Navigation. It has fifty arches and is 950 metres (1040 yards) long. It is made of red sandstone, blue brick and iron. It was built ot serve the Cheshire Lines Committee's Northwich - Chester Railway, opened 1869. The Cheshire Lines Committee was set up in 1865 and was responsible for the creation a series of railway routes linking the west of the county around Stockport and Knutsford to Northwich and Chester.

Full Description

Viaduct across valley of river Dane, river Weaver and the Weaver Navigation. Fifty arch, 1040 yards (950 metres) long (1) and made of red sandstone, blue brick and iron: 12 round arches west of Weaver Navigation, one round arch between Navigation and River Weaver and 35 east of it, including a skew arch over London Road and a wider arch over River Dane. Iron girders with cambered tops span the Navigation and the River Weaver. Rock- faced rusticated stonework to both elevations; tooled intrados to voussoirs; brick lining to arches; plain imposts; recessed stone copings on plain projecting bands; plain pilasters and dentils at imposts to iron spans. Height of viaduct above water level circa 12 metres. (2) Serves Cheshire Lines Committee's Northwich - Chester Railway, opened 1869. (3) The viaduct is Grade II Listed. (2)
