Description

Evaluation on 9-13 Northgate Street consisting of two trenches within the shop premises. The buildings were considerably altered in the late 19th century by the then owner, John Douglas and this was evident in the resulting trenches. Trench 1 showed evidence of post medieval demolition activity. The trench also recorded residual remains of Roman tegula, a stratified layer of rubble containing Tegula sealing a deposits of sandstone itself overlying the natural. Trench 2 recorded a partially demolished sandstone wall course partially demolished and covered in Victorian grano-concrete. No Roman material was recorded from this trench although residual medieval pottery was noted.
