Description
Archaeological evaluation on land at Second Wood Street in Nantwich between July and August 2001. A rapid desk-top assessment was carried out prior to the excavation of 8 trial trenches across the development site on both sides of the street.
The results have clearly shown that important archaeological features and deposits dating to the medieval and early post-medieval periods survive over much of the site, particularly noteworthy was the survival of both timber artefacts and structural remains, quite possibly associated with the production of salt.
The vulnerability of the archaeological featuers and deposits identified during the evaluation will be dependent upon the location, extent and depth of the foundation works associated with the proposed redevelopment.
