Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out between October and November 2000, at the site of a proposed residential development on land north of Forest St., Chester, about 50m back from the historic street frontage of Foregate St. to the north. The evaluation consisted of a rapid map regression study, followed by the excavation of three trial trenches and a sondage by hand. The results show that below a considerable overburden of post-medieval soils, significant archaeological deposits survive. Part of a Roman structure and a large pit or ditch were identified, and the Roman remains include a waterlogged deposit (3). Seventeenth century remains are represented by a ditch and possible structural remains. A susbequent excavation was carried out on the site (E526), it has not yet been published.
