Full Description
The remains of a Roman period structure of an indeterminate nature, represented by what seems to be a sandstone foundation, recorded during excavations on the land north of Forest St. in 2000 (1). A flat, worn sandstone slab, recorded in Trench 2, the base for a dressed sandstone block measuring 1.8m by 2.2m visible in section, indicate the presence of a Roman structure of indeterminate function and extent at this location (1).
Abutting the slab was a 0.08m thick deposit composed of hard-packed sandstone fragments and clay, suggesting a surface. Based on the associated finds, the structure appears to date to the second century (1).
