Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out at a proposed development site at 5 - 7 Foregate St., Chester, immediately outside the East Gate. Most of the area had been excavated for a basement in the 1960s, but archaeological deposits were anticipated in a small area on its southeastern side. Excavation established that a complex sequence of ditches and silting episodes, perhaps beginning in Roman times, were preserved at this location. This site is referred to as Site No.s 25 & 26 in the Defences Monograph (3).
