Full Description
The deposits recorded were interpreted as possibly the latest fills of the medieval city ditch at this location. They appeared to be a mixture of refuse dumps interspersed with more sandy deposits probably thrown in periodically to clean up and / or seal the layers of refuse. The presence of wood fragments in the lowermost, also waterlogged levels indicates that the survival of organic remains and environmental evidence is good. This evidence was found in each of the three excavation trenches. A later medieval period rubbish pit (CHER 10450) was found cutting these deposits in Trench 1 (1).
