Description

An archaeological evaluation carried out in advance of redevelopment at the Queen's School, Chester. Two trial trenches, roughly 1.5m square, were excavated by hand. Excavation in Trench I, in the northwest corner of the proposed extension, revealed a surface and part of a structure associated with the nineteenth century city Goal, sealing redeposited river sand possibly associated with the constuction of the Franciscian Friary, in turn sealing a Roman building. Similar remains were identified in Trench II, where two Roman buildings were identified, the earlier of which was a timber structure. It was concluded that the remains should be preserved in situ.
