Full Description

During archaeological excavations carried out in 1992 at the site of an extension to the Queen’s School, a pathway and what were thought to be post medieval cultivation deposits were identified in horizons pre-dating the construction of the City Gaol (CHER 10315).

The pathway was a compacted surface of finely crushed sandstone, overlying a layer of small sandstone pieces (1). The pathway was associated with a soil horizon that was interpreted as a cultivation soil (1). This horizon was thought to date to between the seventeenth and eighteenth century, as cartographic evidence shows the area to have been small fields or gardens at that time (1).
