Date
September - October 1984
Description
Further investigations of the city walls were carried out in 1984 at two locations: the first being the junction of the buried Roman masonry and later above ground wall at the Engineering Yard, previously examined in 1980, and the second area was in the builders yard, close to Morgan's Mount (ECH 5144). The work assessed how much Roman masonry survived at these two locations (1).
This site is called Northgate House I in the Defences Monograph (2)
This trench was excavated during the course of consolidation works in order to inspect the condition of the lower part of the wall. This revealed the lower two courses of the Roman stone wall above the plinth course, apparently surviving undisturbed and acting as the foundationfor the present outer skin of the main upper body of the wall.
