Description
Following on from excavations carried out in 1909 (ECH2381), as part of the construction of the Masonic Lodge, '...in February, 1914, a trench, two feet wide and four feet deep, was cut in a continuous line from Upper Northgate St., along Hunter St. To the new wind of the Chester Royal Infirmary, for the reception of a large water main. Hopes were entertained that this excavation would reveal some traces of the western wall of the Roman fortress, but unfortunately no such structure was discoverable owing to the shallowness of the trench'. Elsewhere, in a garden on the west side of the Lodge, archaeological excavations took place for a very short period, ending, with few results, when the war began (1).
