Summary

A Neolithic polished stone axe found on Hunter Street. It was finely made with faceted sides; possibly made of jadeite. Residual finds usually occur as a result of soil disturbance when the cutting of one feature removes finds from a lower and therefore earlier layer and re-deposits them closer to the surface

Full Description

Neolithic polished, thin-butted stone axe found at a 'low level' just above the rock a few feet south of room 4 of a Roman barrack block in the gardens on the west side of the Masonic Hall, Hunter Street. Found during excavations in 1914 by Newstead (1). Polished axe, faceted sides, very finely made, possibly jadeite (2).
