Full Description

A series of rock cut pits were recorded on the site of a Roman barrack building at Hunter Street during archaeological investigations carried out by Prof Newstead in 1914. Three shallow pits were found cut into the bedrock underneath the level of the barrack block, two of which lay within the structure with a third a little to the south west. The finds recovered from the fill of the pits was exclusively of a first century date and comprised a small amount of Samian pottery as well as a bronze knife handle and two brooch fragments (1)
