Description

A ramped foundation for St Mary's Lane, consisting of a one metre thick deposit of Roman building debris, was revealed in contractor's trenches. The building debris, which sealed irregularities in the rock surface caused by quarrying in the Roman period, was probably imported to St Mary's Lane in late C11 or early C12. The Roman building debris may have been obtained from the remains of the neighbouring mansio, situated to the south of Castle Street (1).
