Full Description
Observed as part of a salvage recording exercise at a ramped foundation for St Mary's Lane, a 1m thick deposit of Roman building debris was recorded (1).
The building debris, which sealed irregularities in the rock surface said to have been caused by quarrying in the Roman period, was probably imported to St Mary's Lane in the late eleventh or early twelfth century, and the recorders speculated that it may have originally derived from the remains of the neighbouring Mansio, situated to the south of Castle St. (1).
