Description

On the east side of Dee Lane at the Bars, excavations for a Telephone Exchange between 1953 - 1954 produced a large quantity of Roman pottery in an area 30 - 45m south of the south frontage of Foregate St. and 9 - 12m east of the east frontage of Dee Lane. There appears to have been a small stream here and in the silt and gravel, which was 2.4 - 3m below present ground level, there was a quantity of broken Roman pottery, largely dating to the second century. The only structural element found was a wooden pointed stake, driven into the stream bed. The material was thought to result from rubbish from rubbish tipping (1).
