Monument record 8033 - Former Stream Bed with Roman Posts, The Bars

Please read our .

Summary

A former stream bed and evidence of Roman timber architecture in the form of two post holes. Similar features were identified at the site in 1953. The former stream contained water-borne deposits, with alternating bands of silts and gravels, and the excavators suggested that the stream had been modified in Roman times, with cuts suggesting that it had been 'straightened'. The post holes were identified next to the stream bed, and these have been interpreted as a possible water-side revetment or fence line.

Full Description

Excavations at the former BT Exchange Building, the Bars, in 2001, uncovered a former stream bed and evidence of Roman timber architecture (posts). Similar features were identified at the site in 1953 (ECH2494) (1). The former stream contained water-borne deposits, with alternating bands of silts and gravels. The excavators suggested that the stream had been modified in Roman times, with cuts suggesting that it had been 'straightened' (1: p 47).

Two post holes were identified immediately next to the stream bed, and these have been interpreted as a possible water-side revetment or fence line. At this location, the width of the stream was between 3 - 4m (1).
