Full Description
During excavations at the former BT Exchange Building, The Bars, in 2001, a former stream bed (CHER 8033) which contained a substantial rubbish deposit was excavated (1). A large ceramic assemblage dated the deposit to between the second and third centuries, and a large amount of animal bone indicated domestic waste.
The area was interpreted as a 'convenient dumping ground during the Roman period' (1). A large amount of Roman pottery, said to date to the third century, was also reported from this location during excavations in 1953 (2).
