Description

Watergate St. (Stanley Palace), 1940: A quantity of Roman pottery was found on the site of Stanley Palace during alterations to that building in August 1940 (1). Foregate St. (Ring O'Bells), 1940: During extension to the beer cellar from August to September 1940 at the Ring O'Bells Hotel, first and second century pottery, including Samian ware (some stamped), mortaria and coarse wares, roof tiles and portions of three glass vessels, were recovered, as well as one sherd of third to fourth century mortarium (1). The location of Ring O'Bells is not certain, it does not appear on the 1:500 first edition map 1875 in CCR. However, it seems likely that the Ring O'Bells was at the end of Foregate St. and was demolished to make way for the Inner City Ring road (see http://www.chesterwalls.info/ringobells.html).
