Description
Christ Church School, 1939: Samian vessels were found during the excavation of ARP shelters, in the school yard of Christ Church School in November 1939 (1). CHER 8526/1; 11147
Nun's Gardens, 1939: A group of medieval burials, truncating Roman deposits, were found in a small plot south of the Militia Barracks (the spot known locally as the 'Nun's Gardens'), immediately opposite the main entrance to Chester Castle, during excavations for an ARP shelter in 1939 (1) (2). Trustee Savings Bank, Corner of Grosvenor St. and Castle St., 1939: In 1939, a mid-second century flanged Samian ware bowl was found in the garden of the bank during the construction of an ARP shelter (1). CHER 8030/27; 10102
Hunter Street, 1939: Small quantity of Roman pottery from Hunter Street at a depth of 1.4m below present ground level. (1) CHER 8088/26
