Full Description

An air raid protection shelter (ARP) was excavated and built in November 1939, under the direction of Col. Hayes Newington of the Cheshire Regiment who alerted Newstead to the discovery of medieval burials at this location (1, 2). The shelter's location is described as immediately south of the militia barracks, within part of the Nun's Gardens, opposite the entrance to Chester Castle (1).
