Description
Souter's Lane, 1937: Roman pottery was found during excavations for a new sewer east of the Newgate at the junction of Souter's Ln. (1).
Foregate St., 1937: Following on from non-archaeological excavations in 1931 (ECH4976), work continued at the Marks & Spencer's site in 1937, extending southwards from the former area, to a distance of about 160 feet from the street frontage. Roman pottery was reported (1).
Near Foregate St., 1937: Ditch just south of Foregate St. and east of the fortress. When excavated it produced first and second century Samian ware and some oak paddles from the dark peaty fill towards the bottom. It was probably a drainage ditch running down to the river to the south. Possibly a continuation of ditch found on site at City Baths in 1899.
