Description

Roman deposits, impacted by post-medieval tan-pits, were identified in the yard of the Cold Storage Company, Queen St., during excavations in 1926 (1). The OS mapping for 1875 shows that the site was the location of an extensive tannery, and the excavations identified water-logged oak-lined tanning pits (1). Roman finds included an assemblage of Samian ware and coarse wares, but all finds from this period were derived from later contexts and are therefore residual (1).
