Full Description
In 1926, late first and early second pottery was recovered from the yard of the Cold Storage Company, Queen St., during non-archaeological excavations on the site (1). The area lies approximately 162m due east of the fortress wall and was formerly the site of an extensive post-medieval tannery. The area was dissected by old tanning pits, and the Roman finds were therefore unstratified and residual. Finds include Samian ware and coarse ware, a spindle-whorl and a small slate counter (1). The location of tannery shown on 1:500 first edition map 1875 in CCR.
