Description
SJ 87 NW NETHER ALDERLEY C.P. CONGLETON ROAD (East Side)
4/126 Gate piers, wing walls and bridge over moat to the Old Hall
GV II
Gate piers, wing walls and bridge: C17; Ashlar buff sandstone. Short tall wing walls with triangular coping flank gate piers, a squashed T-shape in plan, with ovolo mouldings on each edge. These have a weathered capstone and added cubic finials with diamond shaped panels. C20 wrought iron gate opens onto bridge with low parapets over a recessed segmental arch. Flagged walkway. Parapet turns and becomes revetment wall to moat and joins the house.
The earliest hall of late C16 was reached by a drawbridge probably replaced by these structures c.1660 when hall extended.
