Abstract/Summary
The National Buildings Record (NBR) was founded in 1940, largely on a voluntary basis, to conduct a mainly photographic survey of nationally significant buildings at risk of damage or destruction due to military action. Initially independent from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME), the two organizations shared premises and often collaborated closely. The NBR continued its work after the war and was absorbed by the RCHME in 1963, at which point it was renamed the National Monuments Record (NMR) to reflect its expanded focus on both archaeological and architectural heritage.
