Source/Archive record SCH8893 - Cheshire Sites and Monuments Record

The former Cheshire County Council employed a County Archaeologist and maintained the Cheshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) from 1974. The SMR database was initially held on a mainframe computer, but was transferred by an English Heritage funded Archaeological Assistant between 1986 and 1989, to create a PC based database. In 1989 the permanent post of Archaeological Officer, with responsibility for the SMR, was established. In 2001 the SMR was transferred to the HBSMR database provided by Exegesis SDM, with GIS capabilities added two years later. In 2004, following the completion of the Cheshire Historic Landscape Characterisation and restructuring within the host service, the SMR was renamed the Cheshire Historic Environment Record (HER).
