Abstract/Summary
Archaeological evaluation, comprising four trial trenches, undertaken in 2014 at the western extent of a site at Grange Farm, Hartford, in advance of proposed development. Historic research indicates that the site has never been developed, lying in a rural setting throughout its history. Although there is no evidence for Roman activity on the site, a Roman road is thought to be located along the southern extent of the site at Chester Road. Hartford is thought to have been a small farming community throughout the medieval period and the site appears to have been agricultural fields during the post medieval period.
Aerial photography revealed a potential feature within Marl Pit Field at the western extent of the site, this was investigated during the evaluation. No archaeological features were recorded; the stratigraphy comprised a layer of topsoil below which was natural sand, overlaying a natural clay deposit.
