Description
Archaeological evaluation, comprising four trial trenches, undertaken in 2014 at the western extent of a site at Grange Farm, Hartford, in advance of proposed development. Historic research indicates that the site has never been developed, lying in a rural setting throughout its history. Although there is no evidence for Roman activity on the site, a Roman road is thought to be located along the southern extent of the site at Chester Road. Hartford is thought to have been a small farming community throughout the medieval period and the site appears to have been agricultural fields during the post medieval period.
Aerial photography revealed potential features within Marl Pit Field at the western extent of the site, this was investigated during the evaluation, with four 20m by 2m trenches excavated. No archaeological features were recorded; the stratigraphy comprised a layer of topsoil below which was natural sand, overlaying a natural clay deposit. (1)
