Abstract/Summary
Short report on excavations in the northern area of St Mary's Churchyard conducted by D.Wilson in 1976 on behalf of Cheshire County Council. Documentary evidence indicated that the site of the medieval guildhall of Nantwich lay within the churchyard. The stratigraphy of the area had been confused by road-digging close to the churchyard and the top deposit contained numerous finds from different dates, including medieval tile, lead shot, human bone and post medieval pottery; apart from the medieval tile, the finds were predominantly post-1600. The area had also been part of the graveyard and so was disturbed through grave digging. Due to the limited nature of the excavation conclusions were tentative.
