Abstract/Summary

Wardell Armstrong Archaeology Ltd were commissioned by Tarmac, to maintain an archaeological watching brief at Crown Farm Quarry, Cheshire NGR SJ 57616 70086 (Figure 1) during groundwork’s associated with the consented extension of the quarry southwards. The work was required as part of a planning condition (ref:4/APP/2004/0565) which stipulated that stripping within 40m of the recorded route of a Roman road in this part of the quarry should be subject to an archaeological watching brief. It should be noted that this stage of the watching brief follows on from a watching brief undertaken by Oxford Archaeology North in 2008. The archaeological watching brief was undertaken over six days between the 29th May 2012 and the 7th June 2012. The watching brief monitored the stripping of the topsoil and subsoil. Three pits, a post-hole and a plough scar were discovered. They appeared to be unrelated to each other and contained no finds and so they are probably all agricultural in origin rather than significant archaeological features.
