Title Chester Railway Station West Car Park: Report on an archaeological evaluation
Author/Originator
Report Number
Date/Year 2011

Abstract/Summary

Evaluation carried out on the site of the west car park to determine the potential for below ground archaeological evidence. The results of the evaluation have enabled spexific features of the early railway station to be identified including evidence of its original construction by Thomas Brassey to F Thompson's design in the late 1840s. The archaeological remains relating tot eh initial phase of the railway station identified in the evaluation are therefore of particular significance. The wagon management structures are perhaps less signficant overall in architectural terms. The significance of the evidence is such that preservation in situ was recommended over excavation and preservation by record.
