Date/Year 2005

Abstract/Summary

The Three Pigeons site was evaluated in 2005 in connection with proposals to construct a large extension in the rear yard and beer garden of the Three Pigeons Inn. Three trenches were excavagted and medieval and post-medieval wooden structures were encountered in all three trenches. In addition, a further medieval salt ‘ship’ was encountered. In this instance, detailed discussions with the developers concerning the siting of piles and the depth of the ring beam ensured that the deposits could be preserved in situ. A watching brief was maintained during construction to ensure the successful implementation of the mitigation strategy. The results of the work will be incorporated in the report that is currently being prepared for publication on the adjacent Second Wood Street site. Welsh Row lies on the west bank of the river Weaver and developed as a suburb of Nantwich during the medieval period. Documentary evidence shows that the area close to the river was heavily concerned with salt production and several recent excavations have revealed evidence of the industry. The waterlogged conditions prevalent across much of the town have ensured that much of this material has been preserved in an exceptional state of preservation. In particular, work at an adjacent site on Second Wood Street revealed traces of wooden buildings, barrels, and a hollowed-out log, or salt ship, used as a brine cistern. The organic deposits were in excess of 3m. Deep.
