Abstract/Summary
A programme of field evaluation was carried out in the school grounds in connection with proposals to replace the existing early 20th-century building with a new structure. The school and grounds are situated on the line of the Roman road running south from the industrial settlement at Wilderspool and excavations at the time of the school’s construction revealed evidence of the road and structures alongside it, including clay floors, pits, hearths, and kilns. Trenching revealed the well-preserved remains of the road surface immediately beneath the school playground, together with gravel surfaces, pits, and postholes adjacent to the road. Further excavation and recording will be required within the footprint of the proposed new building, should the development proceed.
