Summary

Excavation by May, on either side of Roman Road, Stockton Heath 1901-04. Revealed a single stone building, west of the main road. Along the souther side was a verandah, with stone bases to support its roof. Clay floors were observed, the lower contained 2 L-shaped flues and a stoke-hole pit and the upper contained 2 circular clay hearths. This building was interpreted as a temple on the basis of finds of a bronze head of the goddess Minerva and the stone head of a unidentified goddess. Also on this site were clay floors, iron smelting furnaces and pits served by branch streets running off at right angles from the main road. A polished flint axe was found in Roman levels.

Full Description

Excavation by May, on either side of Roman Road, Stockton Heath 1901-04. Revealed single stone building, west of the main road, 60 ft long x 28 ft wide. Along the souther side was a verandah, with stone bases to support its roof. Clay floors were observed, the lower contained 2 L-shaped flues and a stoke-hole pit and the upper contained 2 circular clay hearths (1). This building was interpreted as a temple on the basis of finds of a bronze head of the goddess Minerva and the stone head of a unidentified goddess (2).
