Abstract/Summary
An archaeological desk-based assessment of land at Hulme Hall, Allostock, was undertaken by Matrix Archaeology during July and August 2006 on behalf of Leafway Construction Ltd, in advance of proposed site development.
The study area comprised an area of c. 2ha, which included the farmhouse and the mediaeval moated site. The farmhouse was disused at the time of the assessment, and the surrounding land is no longer in the ownership of the farm.
Previous archaeological works known to have been undertaken at the site included a small excavation trench in 1974, and dendochronological dating of timbers within the farmhouse in 2003.
The desk-based assessment comprised consultation of a number of primary and secondary documents, as well as all easily available historic and cartographic sources. This was followed by a site and buildings inspection to determine survival or likely survival of any above or below ground archaeological features.
The farmhouse and the mediaeval bridge over the moat were listed Grade II buildings, and the moated site was a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
