Full Description

<1> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, 1988 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

A Victorian stereoscopic photograph in private possession seems to show a very substantial courtyard of timber framed farm buildings, immediately to the north of the bridge at Hulme Hall.

<2> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol. III, p.153 (Book). SCH1389.

'The water is crossed by a stone bridge of two arches, the projecting piers of which have been filled up with stone seats, placed in a point which would have been peculiarly disagreeable to the taste of the modern day, as this side of the moat fronts a large range of antient barns and stables, forming, agreeably to old custom, the principle avenue to the house.'

<3> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT/2 1847 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

A long range with two projecting short wings is depicted on this map. To the immediate north-west is another smaller building. They stand at the boundary between plots named 'House, Outbuildings, Yard, Garden, Moat and Avenue' and 'Barn Meadow'.

<4> Matrix Archaeology, 2006, Hulme Hall, Allostock, Vale Royal, Chester, Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment, R2627, p.9 & 15 (Client Report). SCH4672.

On the edge of 'Barn Meadow', was a large south-east to north-west range of buldings, with a small structure adjacent.

<5> Ordnance Survey, 1871-1882, Ordnance Survey County Series (Epoch 1) 25 inch to 1 mile - Cheshire, SJ7272, 1877 (Maps and Plans). SCH2462.

Not depicted on this map, so the buildings have probably been demolished by this date.
