Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by Gifford between November 2004 and February 2005 on behalf of Muller Properties during groundworks associated with housing development at Warmingham Mill, Warmingham. It was anticipated that evidence might be uncovered for a mill referred to as having existed on the site since 1289. Across the majority of the site no archaeological features were observed, indicating that the current development had not damaged any sensitive archaeological remains, however the footings of the existing mill were removed during additional groundworks and this revealed an oak pile and ring-beam arrangement supporting dressed sandstone blocks. Samples were taken from the timbers, but assessment showed that they were unsuitable for dendochronological dating. It has not been possible to ascertain whether these structural features are associated with a pre-19th century mill. No further archaeological material was recovered which could determine its exact age, but a thorough record of the construction materials was made.
